Welcome to Science!

Fall 2008 Update

The science vertical team has made significant progress with the reconstruction of the Pembroke Public Schools K-12 science curriculum.

The team met for several sessions during the spring of 2008 and for five full days during the summer.  In addition to rewriting the district’s philosophy statement for science education, our work on the five strands (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth & Space, and Technology & Engineering) included:

· An MCAS item analysis;

· Identification of the essential questions to be addressed K-12 in each strand;

· Development of a vocabulary reference tool to ensure the consistency of science language across all grades;

· Identifying grade levels at which each standard must be mastered in each of the five strands.

The team approached the curriculum work using a backwards planning model, beginning with the Biology strand, based on the 9th grade MCAS requirements & AP Biology course.  Our work within this strand included:

· Breaking each standard down into measurable objectives;

· Identifying assessment activities for each objective;

· Compiling former MCAS questions to incorporate into standardized assessments for each common unit.

As the school year begins, the team will share our work with colleagues and will gather activities and assessment materials for the continued development of our common Biology units.  We will meet as a vertical team several times a month to create one unit per grade level within the Biology strand.  We will then follow the same process as we focus on the other strands, beginning with Chemistry.

In the ’08-’09 school year, students and parents can expect to see that the science curriculum will align more closely with the Massachusetts frameworks.  They can also expect increased collaboration and communication between teachers at all levels as we continue to reconstruct and coordinate the science curriculum.
