Fall 2008 Update The mathematics vertical team was immediately charged with the task of researching and recommending textbooks for grades 5 and 6 (district wide). We reviewed samples from several sources, had a web based presentation on a brand new series from Prentice Hall, and after much discussion presented the faculty with two series: Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley (SFAW) Diamond Edition and the new series from Prentice Hall titled enVisionMath. We designed and administered a survey for the elementary faculty and gathered data on which series would best meet the needs of the students and faculty of the Pembroke School District. An overwhelming majority decided that the SFAW series would be a perfect fit for our districts needs: a proven rigorous MA aligned series, strong technology component including parental online access, Exam View assessment software, and alignment with the 7-11 mathematics textbook series. The rest of our work has been devoted to writing performance indicators for the Massachusetts Mathematics Framework. A performance indicator is a clear, specific, functional statement of what a Pembroke student should know and be able to do. We are using two other standards documents in this work: the College Board Mathematics Standards for grades 6 – 12 and the American Diploma Projects Standards for Mathematics grades K – 12. As in the other disciplines, each performance indicator will be identified as secure or exemplary. This work is ongoing and should be completed by the end of the school year. The vertical team also created PDF files of the previously released MCAS questions. These files have been sorted by learning standard and by year and have been stored on our internal servers for faculty to review. Eventually parents, students and the public will be able to quickly search this database and look at the “evidence” of mastery for each learning standard according to previously released MCAS exams. The vertical team will continue to add questions to this database by both grade level and standard. This database will serve as the foundation of the assessment system in mathematics. Everything that a Pembroke student should know and be able to do will be assessed and recorded with respect to this database. Eventually, a grade assigned in mathematics will be specific to the actual MA learning standards. For example, we will be able to determine an individual student’s strengths and weaknesses in the areas of Number Sense, Patterns, Relations and Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Probability and Statistics.
