Pembroke Public Schools Profile Pembroke is a suburban community located in the South Shore area of southeastern Massachusetts. Originally part of neighboring Duxbury, the town is located 26 miles south of Boston. Pembroke was settled in the 1640s by Robert Barker, who according to tradition, received the grant of land from Myles Standish. Barker settled on the banks of the Herring River near what is now Barker and High Streets. The community, then principally farming, was incorporated in 1712. History has it that Pembroke residents played a key role in the Revolutionary War by drafting the "Pembroke Resolves" considered by historians to be the first document declaring the colonies independence and urging them to take up arms against the British. Pembroke has experienced much growth in the past two decades with a population exceeding 18,000 residents, nevertheless is still remains a pleasant rural town, described in the Boston Globe as a place of "rolling roads that dip and wind past enchanting lakes and ponds." The town is accessible to the MBTA commuter rail service into Boston. A majority of Pembroke residents are in professional or business occupations. Pembroke's school system has adapted to reflect the population shifts and changing educational goals of the community. Once part of the Silver Lake Regional School District, Pembroke has expanded to an independent PreK-12 school system to best meet the needs of an enrollment that is expected to increase by 17.32% over the next ten years. There is considerable emphasis on preparation for higher education. The newly established Pembroke High School and Pembroke Community Middle School as well as the recent expansion and renovation of the elementary schools are evidence of the community’s personal and financial support. The Pembroke Public School System consists of three elementary schools: North Pembroke Elementary, Hobomock Elementary, and Bryantville Elementary. In addition, there is a middle school and high school: Pembroke Community Middle School and Pembroke High School.
