With the opening of Pembroke Community Middle School in September 2004, the building that now houses the town’s seventh and eighth grade students returned to the purpose for which it was originally built some 36 years ago. Situated on a 39-acre parcel of land off School Street (Rte. 27) in Pembroke, the building was constructed to relieve severe overcrowding at the Silver Lake Regional High School located a few miles down the road in Kingston. That campus had been home to students in grades seven through twelve from the four Silver Lake towns of Pembroke, Kingston, Halifax and Plympton since its construction in 1955.

The Rte. 27 building continued to be well-used after it ceased operation as a junior high school in the early 1990’s. During the 1990’s the building housed the Silver Lake Integrated Pre-School, the Silver Lake High School Pre-School programs, the Silver Lake Special Education offices, The Pilgrim Area Collaborative, South Shore Head Start and Childcare, and the Plymouth County Police Academy. Beginning in 1998 all three Pembroke elementary schools used the building to house their kindergartners to ease overcrowding at their own buildings and during the 1999 - 2000 academic year all Hobomock Elementary students used the building while their school underwent extensive renovations.

With the tenants vacating the building during the winter of 2003, groundbreaking ceremonies were held in April 2003. The renovation project included the construction of a new 13,900 square foot, two-story addition, and a top to bottom renovation of the existing 83,200 square foot building. Site work included a new parking lot, separate bus loop, emergency vehicle loop, a softball field, a new basketball court, and reconstructed drainage, electrical and septic systems. The Pembroke Community Middle School now stands to serve the educational needs of the town’s seventh and eighth grade students for years to come.
